Penang : Ais Tingkap Window Sherbet, Lebuh Tamil

If you are feeling hot on the sunny island of Penang, head over to Chowrasta Market and next to it on Lebuh Tamil, you will chance upon a stall that sells Window Ice or Window Sherbet; Ais Tingkap in Malay.

We asked the existing owners why it was called Ais Tingkap. They told us that their grandfather used to sell this drink thru a window, hence the name Ais Tingkap.

This is a family business. They children have kept their promise of manning the stall, each taking turns to learn the business and the continue the legacy of their grandfather. The other stalls all belong to the siblings.

He is always busy making the drinks.

Coconut is known for its cooling properties. Add in malva nut, basil seeds that look like frog eggs and rose essence, this is a cooling drink meant to quench the thirst as well as provide you with some herbal cooling properties. It is not very sweet as there is more water and coconut in it. A mild rose flavor is what you will enjoy.

Firstly, the ice is shaved, sugar is added, coconut water poured and some spices sprayed. Add a few slices of coconut and you have your drink. It does take time to prepare so do have a seat and wait.

To be really honest, I drank two cups. At Rm1.20 per cup, it was a good drink to enjoy on a hot day. It is a must try whilst in Penang. This won’t fill you up, so instead of buying a soft drink, have a blast from the 1930’s. This is a rare drink and something different. Do try it.
